Napoleon Bonaparte Broward was the 19th Governor of the State of Florida from 1905 - 1909 and is best remembered by die-hard environmentalists as the guy who wanted to destroy the Everglades by draining parts of it to develop fertile farmland. Today, he gets his comeuppance as a 12-foot-tall puppet who will be paraded around Hollywood's ArtsPark at Young Circle leading a procession of Florida Everglades themed puppet creatures that include an alligator, a dragonfly, a woodpecker and a catfish.
This event is worth the price of admission...FREE. Took my kids last year and actually enjoyed the spectacle. Homemade rafts, human powered, begin and end a "parade like" race along Ft. Lauderdale's New River. This year's theme for raft entries is Pirate of the River (which I think was last year's theme) where craft and crew are decorated and judged on creativity, design and spirit. Spectators are encouraged to bring water guns to shoot at their favorite villians of the sea as they float and paddle by. Competing for prizes awarded post race, join the fun at Esplanade Park fthis Saturday from 3 - 7pm. All proceeds benefit the Rotary Club's 1090 Foundation to provide local students college scholarships, international humanitarian aid and infrasctucture projects.
